Bob Knight to Coach at Georgia? Empty Bob Knight to Coach at Georgia?

Post by Orange Mon Feb 09, 2009 5:19 pm

Georgia may be on Bob Knight's mind, but the Hall of Fame coach isn't saying so specifically.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Sunday that if Knight were offered the Bulldogs job, he would take it, a source close to the coach told the newspaper.

    Tirico & Van Pelt
Bob Knight has not been contacted by Georgia about their vacant head coaching position. Bob says he would be interested if the right situation came up.

Appearing Monday on the Tirico & Van Pelt Show on ESPN Radio, Knight said he has not had contact with Georgia and revisited his past stance about whether he'd return to the college ranks.

"It has to be a situation that I think is right for me and one where I would be right for the university," Knight said. "I have never said that I wouldn't coach again. I've simply said in the past, if the right situation came along, I would be interested."

Georgia fired Dennis Felton last Thursday after the Bulldogs (9-12 overall, 0-6 SEC) got off to an 0-5 start in the conference. Associate coach Pete Herrmann was named interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Knight, 68, left Texas Tech in the middle of the 2008 season. The winningest men's college basketball coach in history with 902 victories coached the Red Raiders from 2001-08 after a 29-year run at Indiana that ended in controversy.

"He doesn't want it to look as if he's pursuing the job," the source close to Knight told the Journal-Constitution. "He'd like to be offered it, and if offered, he'd take it.

"He doesn't want it to look as if he's looking for work, but I can assure you that he'd like to have the job. It's the idea of coaching a team in the Southeastern Conference that appeals to him. There are just so many things he could do for Georgia basketball. This would be his last stop, and he likes that."

After leaving Texas Tech -- the reins were handed to Knight's son Pat -- Knight has worked as an analyst for ESPN.

Georgia junior forward-center Albert Jackson expressed enthusiasm when told Knight might have interest in coaching the Bulldogs.

"I would love to have a coach of that caliber, that stature," Jackson told the Journal-Constitution. "You have a Hall of Fame coach, you have somebody like that, all you can do is be happy. If Bobby Knight wants to come in here, I'd be more than happy."

Don't think Georgia is really a good fit for Knight, maybe a school with more pieces set up already.

I don't see it happening. You know how ESPN likes to blow things out of proportion, especially with their own employees. This is just a way to get people to tune in.

In other news, Michael Phelps smokes pot! Like 50 percent of the country!

Ha, I agree with you. As much as I love ESPN it is beginning to turn into nothing but a quest for good ratings. Plus everyone there is starting to act a little crazy in the head too. Just look at Kenny Mayne, Skip Bayless, and even Woody Paige for example. They are starting to act to wild in my opinion.

I don't trust them that much anyways. I just look at the things the real people are saying and how the team is doing. I wouldn't believe them if they said Carolina would be #1 seed. I would just skipp them and figure it out myself.
