ACC vs Big East Empty ACC vs Big East

Post by orangeball Sun Feb 15, 2009 3:25 pm

Arguably the most debated topic in all of college basketball this year. Which conference do you think is the better conference?

I'm going with the Big East just because there are so many GREAT teams, and the #1 overall seed. I think it is very close though this year as both conferences have great teams and both will get a lot of teams in the tournament.

As for any other conference, I dont think they come close.

    Thoughts?

I'm gonna have to go with the Big East as well. The ACC is really top heavy (although the top teams have had trouble beating the bottom teams as of late) while the Big East is just incredibly deep. Some teams that are far down in the Big East standings could finish fifth in the ACC. Also, the Big East has the #1 and the #4 team in the country right now and are on pace for two number one seeds in the tourney.

BIG EAST. The more i watch the ACC play the more beatable they appear. The UNC vs Miami game just cemented it for me, a good defensive team with a mediocre offense will beat UNC. Duke? anyone with size and athleticism. WF??... could be anyone any given night. But its a game of match ups and good teams can lose to bad ones at any point. I'm bias, but i say the BE and it isn't as close as people seem to think it is IMO.

Non issue. The selection committee has said they don't care. Why should we?

I think here is how it would be played-

#1 Big East- UConn vs. #1 ACC- Carolina

Carolina wins in a hard fought battle, no favoritism from me.

#2 BE- Pitt vs. #2ACC- Duke

I think Singler comes up big and takes home an upset in there favor

#3 BE- Marquette vs. #3 ACC- Wake

    Wake wins easily

#4 BE- Louiseville vs. #4 ACC- Clemson

Cardinals win with there amazing backcourt

    ____________________________________________________________

    It would be ACC- 2
    Big East- 2

Total, I did the top 8 teams from each, and Big East won 5-3

Buggers, didn't you call it 3-1 ACC?

Uconn vs UNC is advantage Uconn if Dyson is around. UNC is great, but they don't have the defense that Uconn has to fall back on. Without Dyson, UNC probably wins this matchup 6 or 7 times out of 10, simply because it negates a lot of the defensive advantage.

Duke would lose to Pitt 9 out of 10 times. I have no respect for Duke, they are still heavily dependent on their outside shooting, and Paulus is not great a leading a team.

Marquette vs Wake is a toss-up in my mind. I can't believe you'd think Wake would win easily? Wake is much bigger, but also much younger. McNeal and James are 2 VERY good defensive guards that could negate Teague to a degree. Marquette's a much more experienced team. Gotta call this one 50/50.

Louisville vs Clemson. Louisville 7 out of 10, if not more. Clemson doesn't seem to step up in big games ever, especially as the season progresses. The only exception to this is that dismantling of Duke, and I already gave my feelings about them.

I think that it has to be the Big East.....

The top ACC teams haven't looked too good lately. I know Bracketology isn't necessarily the best indicator but the Big East is going to have

Uconn and PITT probably get 1's
    UL a #2
    Marq and Vill #4's
    Cuse - #5 - 6
    WVU - #7
and then probably one more around a 10.

    ACC
    UNC - #1
    Wake - #2-3
    Duke and Clem - #4's
    FSU - #8
and maybe BC, Miami, or VT at 10-12

The Big East has more very good to great teams, and the next 5 or so teams are very comparable so I think the Big East has to be considered better. I know that there will be a lot of people that think if a team from one of these conferences win the National Championship then that means the overall conference is better, but remember it is a conference debate and not which one has the best team. But the BE just has more very good- great teams and just as many decent teams.

and yeah I just can't see how Duke could cover Blair and Young if they played PITT, they couldn't stop Blair last year and that was only his 9th college game. They just don't have the Big guys to contend with good interior players. They could do alright with Marquette, but PITT and UCONN would give Duke serious problems.

Just look at it this way, does anyone here really think Duke, Wake Forest, or Clemson could be Final 4 teams? No chance.

In the Big East, you need to look at Uconn, Pitt, and Louisville all as legit Final 4 contenders. In the 2nd tier, you've got to give Marquette and Villanova a better chance of sneaking into a Final 4 or making an Elite 8 than you would Duke and Wake Forest.

Heck, a team like Syracuse, if they make the tourney, are as capable as a Duke or Wake Forest.

There is no conference that can compare to the Big East this year. The top teams are all very dangerous. The worst of the bunch in the top 5 is Marquette, and I'd take them over Duke everyday.

And nevermind the depth. From St John's up, nothing but quality teams.
